    He created essential features like the menu bar and double-clicking. Importantly, he developed the selection lasso, which remains an integral part of software interfaces today. Atkinson also pioneered MacPaint, showcasing a graphical user interface when most systems relied on text. This application changed how users interacted with computers.

    In addition, he developed QuickDraw, a graphics toolbox for the Macintosh and Lisa computers. This innovation transformed computer graphics into a more accessible field. To further enhance user experience, Atkinson introduced HyperCard, allowing anyone to create hypertext links without programming knowledge.

    Apple CEO Tim Cook honored Atkinson’s legacy, calling him a “true visionary.” Cook emphasized that Atkinson’s creativity and groundbreaking efforts would inspire future generations.

    Beyond his work at Apple, Atkinson co-founded General Magic in the 1990s. This company created software and electronics for Motorola and Sony. Later, he joined Numenta, focusing on artificial intelligence innovations.

    Atkinson was also an avid nature photographer. His book, Within the Stone, features stunning close-up images of polished rocks.
