Google Messages is taking a step forward with custom icons for RCS group chats. Recently, tech enthusiasts discovered this feature in an APK teardown of the latest beta version. Users can now manually enable this exciting option, offering a more personalized experience.
Currently, Google Messages auto-generates icons from group members’ initials or profile pictures. However, soon, users will have the ability to customize these icons. By tapping a pencil icon next to the group chat’s avatar, users can upload and modify their chosen images, allowing for cropping or rotation before finalizing.
With this feature, group members will receive a notification whenever someone updates the group chat icon. Additionally, when creating a new group chat, users can select a custom icon right from the start. While not yet available in all versions, the anticipation surrounding this function suggests imminent rollout.
This enhancement aligns Google Messages with popular messaging apps that prioritize user personalization. As communities grow more interconnected through technology, features like custom icons enhance the user experience and foster group identity. Stay tuned for updates as this promising feature moves closer to a wide release.
