Researchers believe it served as a burial site for centuries before being transformed into a healing shrine during the late Roman period.

    A female skeleton rests in the large sarcophagus at the heart of the tomb. However, looting has disturbed other burial places. Artifacts from this monumental site include a gold ring depicting Apollo alongside a “healing serpent,” reinforcing the connection between Apollo and medicine.

    Healing Shrine Artifacts Unearthed

    Inside the tomb, archaeologists found various artifacts that speak to its second life as a shrine. These include coins, gold leaves from a wreath, and small vases. Additionally, excavators discovered clay anatomical votive offerings—models of fingers and parts of arms. Such items likely served as tokens from individuals seeking healing or expressing gratitude for medical recovery.

    Ongoing excavation will expand our understanding of this ancient complex. Archaeologists aim to clarify the tomb’s original structure and pinpoint times of use. They plan further research in the region, revealing how this monument contributed to local history and health practices.
