MIT Affiliates Recognized as 2024 AI2050 Fellows

Five faculty members and two alumni from MIT earned spots in the prestigious 2024 cohort of AI2050 Fellows. Schmidt Sciences, a philanthropic initiative led by Eric and Wendy Schmidt, announced this honor. The initiative aims to accelerate scientific innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence.

This year’s theme revolves around a central question: “It’s 2050. AI has turned out to be hugely beneficial to society. What happened?” Each fellow will explore how AI solved critical problems, unlocking opportunities to enhance society.

    Leading Researchers and Their Projects

David Autor stands out as a senior fellow in this cohort. He serves as the Daniel (1972) and Gail Rubinfeld Professor in the Department of Economics. Autor will study how AI adoption impacts employment and earnings. His work aims to provide clear, real-time data for policymakers and entrepreneurs.

Sara Beery, an assistant professor in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, joins as an early career fellow. Her focus lies in developing computer vision methods for environmental monitoring. Beery collaborates with various organizations to address real-world challenges while promoting diversity in AI research.

Another early career fellow, Gabriele Farina, specializes in AI, computer science, and economics. Farina explores decision-making and game theory to understand strategic interactions. His insights will contribute to advancing computational methods in various fields.

Marzyeh Ghassemi, also an early career fellow, integrates AI into healthcare. Her research focuses on fair and robust machine learning models. Ghassemi’s contributions have gained recognition in both academic and popular media.

Yoon Kim, an assistant professor, rounds out the early career fellows. His work merges natural language processing with machine learning techniques. Kim seeks to refine how models learn and interact with human language.

    Additional Notable Alumni

The cohort also features alumni, including Roger Grosse and David Rolnick, who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Grosse, now at the University of Toronto, and Rolnick, associated with the Mila-Quebec AI Institute, bring valuable insights to the fellowship.

In summary, the selection of these MIT affiliates highlights the institute’s commitment to addressing pressing challenges in AI. Through innovative research, these fellows aim to shape a future where AI benefits society broadly. With their diverse expertise, they are poised to tackle some of the most crucial issues in the field today.
