    Top Highlights

    1. Microsoft has shifted focus from developing its own Xbox-branded handheld to improving Windows 11 performance on existing PC gaming handhelds due to criticisms of the OS.

    2. An internally developed Xbox handheld, once rumored for a 2027 launch, is currently not in active development, though interest in the idea remains.

    3. Microsoft is still engaged in the handheld market, with a third-party device, "Project Kennan," in collaboration with ASUS, targeting a 2025 release featuring an enhanced Windows 11 experience.

    4. Integration challenges with Windows 11 on early PC handhelds have sparked excitement over alternative operating systems like SteamOS, now available on devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S.

Microsoft Delays Development of Handheld Xbox

Microsoft fans hoping for a new Xbox handheld will need to wait longer. Reports suggest that the company has shifted its focus. Instead of developing a dedicated Xbox handheld, Microsoft aims to improve the performance of Windows 11 on existing handheld devices.

Windows Central recently reported that the long-rumored handheld, potentially launching in 2027 alongside the next Xbox console, is no longer a top priority. While concepts for the device exist, Microsoft has halted progress on its internal development.

This doesn’t mean Microsoft is stepping away from the handheld market entirely. The company continues to work on a third-party console with ASUS, known as Project Kennan. Set to launch in 2025, this device may feature AMD’s Z2 Extreme chip. It promises a refined Windows 11 experience tailored for gaming.

Transitioning to an ideal user experience is crucial. Early attempts, like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, faced criticism due to software integration issues. In contrast, the Lenovo Legion Go S recently shipped with SteamOS, offering a streamlined interface for gamers.

As technology evolves, companies like Microsoft face tough choices. While the Xbox handheld may take longer to materialize, innovations in urban gaming ecosystems appear promising. Advances like these can reshape how users engage with technology.
