    Essential Insights

    1. Deadline Set: The MoHUA has mandated the NMSCDCL to complete all outstanding projects by December 31, 2025, following delays in the Smart City Mission initiatives.

    2. Pending Projects: Two major projects, worth Rs200 crore, are currently pending – the augmentation of a water treatment plant and a de-silting project under the Ahilyabai Holkar bridge.

    3. Progress Assurance: NMSCDCL CEO Sumant More assures that both projects are on track to be completed ahead of the deadline despite previous setbacks.

    4. Challenges Identified: Factors causing delays include legal issues, clearance delays, land acquisition problems, vendor availability, and project scope changes, according to Smart City officials.

Deadline Set for Smart City Projects

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has given the Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) a clear deadline. The corporation must complete all outstanding projects by Dec. 31, 2025. This directive, sent recently via letter, highlights the urgency of completing two major projects valued at Rs200 crore. These initiatives include upgrades to the water treatment plant and a de-silting project featuring a mechanical gate under the Ahilyabai Holkar bridge.

The Chief Executive Officer of NMSCDCL, Sumant More, confirmed the receipt of this directive, expressing optimism about the progress. “Both ongoing projects are on track and are anticipated to be finished well before the deadline,” he stated. The Smart City Mission originally ended on March 31, but the Centre extended the timeline to facilitate these critical upgrades.

    Progress Amid Challenges

The NMSCDCL has undertaken a total of 21 projects, amounting to Rs1,122 crore. Thus far, it has completed 19 projects funded by the Smart City Corporation, totaling Rs946.3 crore. Issues have arisen, however. Officials pointed to various challenges delaying progress, such as legal complications and delays in obtaining necessary clearances.

Moreover, the need for land acquisition and vendor availability remains significant in medium-sized cities. There is also a critical focus on utilizing the Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) efficiently. The corporation continues to adapt to shifting project priorities, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing Nashik’s urban landscape and improving residents’ quality of life.
