Google Messages Blurs Nude Images on Android

Google has rolled out a new safety feature for its Messages app on Android. The feature, called Sensitive Content Warnings, aims to improve user safety. After beta testing since April, it is now more widely available.

This tool can detect and blur images containing nudity. However, users must be signed into a Google Account to access this feature. When the app identifies a sensitive image, it provides several options. Users can choose to learn why such images can be harmful, block the sender, return to the main screen, or simply dismiss the image. They can also opt to view the blurred image if they acknowledge the risk.

Moreover, the app now warns users when they attempt to send or forward a nude image. This prompt requires acknowledgment, which adds an extra layer of caution. Supervised users, particularly minors, will find this feature enabled by default. Parents can manage settings through the Family Link app. Unsupervised teens aged 13 to 17 have the option to disable it, while adults must opt in.

Google emphasizes privacy with this feature. The processing of images occurs locally on the device, using Android System SafetyCore tools. Importantly, no identifiable data is sent to Google servers. However, the company acknowledges that the tool may sometimes misidentify images.

Overall, this feature aims to create a safer communication environment. By implementing such innovations, Google supports safer interactions while considering user privacy. As technology evolves, features like these play a crucial role in promoting responsible digital behavior.
