    2. Covert Activities: Shi reportedly held numerous one-on-one meetings with Apple team members to extract sensitive information about various sensors, while secretly preparing to join Oppo.

    3. Unauthorized Data Transfer: The lawsuit claims Shi downloaded 63 files from internal Apple folders to a USB drive before searching online for methods to erase evidence of his actions.

    4. Oppo’s Response: Oppo denies any wrongdoing, asserting no evidence links their employee’s actions to Apple’s trade secrets and claiming no misappropriation occurred.

Apple Accuses Ex-Employee of Theft for Rival Firm

Apple has launched a lawsuit against a former employee, alleging he stole trade secrets related to the Apple Watch. The company claims Chen Shi, who worked as a Sensor System Architect, conspired with the Chinese tech company Oppo. This legal action highlights ongoing concerns about intellectual property in the tech industry.

According to the lawsuit, Shi worked with Apple from January 2020 to June 2025. However, he sought employment with Oppo as early as April 2025. Apple asserts that Shi misled his team, citing family obligations as his reason for leaving instead of mentioning job searches. This deception raises questions about trust and transparency in corporate environments.

Moreover, Apple claims Shi engaged in suspicious activities before his departure. He reportedly downloaded 63 files from protected folders and conducted internet searches on how to wipe a MacBook clean. He even communicated with Oppo, stating his intent to “collect as much information as possible” about Apple’s health-sensing technologies.

In response, Oppo denied any wrongdoing. The company stated it found no evidence linking Shi’s conduct at Oppo to the allegations. It insists that it has not misappropriated any of Apple’s trade secrets.

This lawsuit is not an isolated incident for Apple. Earlier this year, the company sued another ex-employee who allegedly shared confidential information regarding its Vision Pro headset. Such legal actions reflect the heightened competition and innovation within the tech industry, particularly as companies rush to develop next-generation wearable technologies.

As smart cities and urban innovation surge in importance, the integrity of trade secrets becomes crucial. With increased collaboration and competition, companies must navigate the fine line between inspiration and unethical practices. Ensuring robust safeguards for intellectual property can foster innovation while maintaining ethical standards within the tech community.
