    Essential Insights

    TL;DR:

    1. A Galaxy Ring user experienced a dangerous battery swelling while wearing the device, necessitating a hospital visit for removal.
    2. The user suspects the swelling was caused by exposure to salt water and noted prior issues with the ring’s battery life, which dropped significantly.
    3. Samsung acknowledged the incident but has yet to provide a clear response or solution regarding the malfunction.
    4. The Galaxy Ring’s limited water resistance has raised concerns about its durability, leading the owner to vow never to wear a smart ring again.

Galaxy Ring Battery Scare Leaves User Stranded and Hospitalized (Updated)

A Samsung Galaxy Ring user faced a harrowing experience after the device’s battery reportedly swelled while still on their finger. The incident left the user in pain and unable to remove the ring. Ultimately, they required medical assistance, as airline staff denied them boarding due to the emergency.

The user, tech creator Daniel, detailed the frightening event via social media. He reported the swelling began shortly before his flight, making the ring increasingly uncomfortable. In follow-up posts, he shared images exposing the ring’s distorted internal structure. Samsung UK responded promptly, expressing their concern and asking for direct communication.

This situation escalated quickly. Daniel sought help at a hospital, where staff used ice to reduce the swelling and a medical lubricant to safely remove the device. Attempts to dislodge the ring at the airport with soap and lotion proved ineffective, exacerbating the issue instead.

Daniel speculated about potential causes for this malfunction. He pointed to Hawaii’s high temperatures, exposure to salt water, and frequent flights as possible factors that damaged the battery. Notably, the Galaxy Ring is not designed to withstand salt water exposure, despite its 10ATM water resistance and IP68 rating.

Before this incident, Daniel had already experienced poor battery performance, stating it lasted only 1.5 days—far less than the advertised seven-day life. This raises serious concerns about the reliability of the Galaxy Ring, which debuted in July 2024 as Samsung’s first smart ring.

Samsung has yet to respond publicly to these alarming reports. It remains unclear what actions the company plans to take moving forward. As urban innovation continues to shape technology, incidents like these highlight the importance of rigorous testing and safety standards for wearable devices.

This alarming event serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with new technology. However, it also underscores the importance of advancements in smart cities, where innovations can enhance everyday life—if safety and reliability are prioritized.
