    Fast Facts

    1. Future Power Demand: Global power demand from data centers is projected to more than double by 2030, significantly increasing current U.S. electricity consumption in this sector from 4% to 9%.

    2. MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI): MITEI has launched the Data Center Power Forum to unite researchers and industry experts to develop innovative solutions for sustainable power management in data centers, addressing the challenges of rising energy demands, especially from AI.

    3. Collaborative Research: The forum will provide insights on energy supply and regulations, while funding projects exploring low-carbon solutions, efficient algorithm designs, and optimal site selection for data centers, fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

    4. Unique Dialogue Opportunities: MITEI facilitates discussions among leading tech companies and research scientists to tackle the complexities of decarbonizing power for data centers, highlighted in recent panel sessions at their annual conferences.

MIT Launches Data Center Power Forum to Tackle Energy Demands

The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) took a significant step in September by launching the Data Center Power Forum. This new effort aims to unite MIT researchers with industry experts. Together, they will address the mounting energy demand from data centers.

The need for this initiative stems from a projected doubling of global power demand from data centers by 2030. In 2023, data centers consumed 4 percent of the electricity in the United States. By 2030, that number could rise to 9 percent, according to the Electric Power Research Institute. This expected rise in demand primarily arises from the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI).

    Addressing Challenges with Collaborative Solutions

MITEI’s Data Center Power Forum focuses on empowering companies to tackle the challenges associated with this surge. The forum builds on insights gained from earlier MITEI events, such as the May 2025 symposium on energy for AI expansion. As technology evolves, ensuring that the electric grid can handle new demands becomes increasingly critical.

William H. Green, director of MITEI, noted that the forum gathers members committed to sustainable growth in AI and energy solutions. Companies involved have expressed strong interest in providing resources for extensive research on energy issues tied to data centers.

    Innovative Research Initiatives Underway

Participants will gain insights into energy supply, grid management, and electricity market policies. MITEI’s Future Energy Systems Center will fund proposals related to data centers, broadening the research landscape. Program manager Deep Deka emphasized the complexity of meeting data center power needs.

“We’re looking at multiple angles to expand transmission capacity, ensure quality electrical service, and shift computing tasks based on energy availability,” said Deka. This comprehensive approach aligns with MITEI’s mission to advance zero- and low-carbon energy solutions.

    Building Connections Across Sectors

The forum encourages discussions among industry stakeholders, fostering a collaborative environment. This interaction allows for diverse perspectives on key data center challenges. During MITEI’s recent Annual Research Conference, experts from major tech firms, infrastructure developers, and utility companies discussed sustainable power strategies.

MITEI remains committed to addressing the energy challenges posed by data centers. By drawing insights from academia and industry, the Data Center Power Forum aims to create actionable solutions for a data-driven future.
