    Top Highlights

    1. New Interoperability: Meta has announced that BirdyChat and Haiket will be the first third-party messaging services to integrate with WhatsApp in the European Union, following the DMA’s regulations.

    2. Testing Phase: Integration has been tested in small-scale trials since 2023, ensuring seamless communication across platforms for users on both Android and iOS.

    3. User Control: WhatsApp users will receive a notification in their Settings to opt into the integration, with the option to disable it anytime, maintaining user choice and privacy under the DMA.

    4. Future Expansion: Meta plans to further expand WhatsApp’s interoperability with additional messaging apps in compliance with the DMA, including group chat features to be rolled out later.

Meta has made significant strides in digital communication. Recently, the company announced that WhatsApp will now interoperate with two other messaging services, BirdyChat and Haiket, within the European Union. This move follows the rules outlined in the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which took effect earlier this year.

Meta began working on this initiative in 2023, focusing on enabling third-party chat integration. The company conducted small-scale tests over the past few months to ensure seamless communication between WhatsApp and its new partners. Users can expect the integration to roll out across Europe soon.

With this update, users will enjoy the ability to send messages, images, voice messages, videos, and files between the three services, regardless of whether they use Android or iOS. Moreover, Meta emphasized that any messaging service that collaborates with WhatsApp must maintain the same level of end-to-end encryption required under DMA’s guidelines.

Soon, users will receive notifications in their WhatsApp Settings tab, explaining how to opt-in to third-party chats. Flexibility is key; users can choose whether to enable this feature and can turn it off whenever they wish.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to expand WhatsApp’s interoperability with additional apps, enhancing user experience in the digital landscape. While group chat functionality will not be available at launch, it is slated for future development as partners prepare to support this feature.

As smart cities evolve, fostering innovation in urban environments hinges on effective communication. By enabling interoperability, Meta not only promotes user choice but also paves the way for a more interconnected digital ecosystem. This shift stands to enrich the lives of users, making communication more versatile and user-friendly.
