Recently diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, Heineman revealed that further treatments were no longer effective. Her GoFundMe campaign aimed to assist with funeral expenses, as her children made arrangements during this difficult time. Tragically, she had lost her wife, Jennell Jaquays, in 2024 due to complications from Guillain–Barré syndrome.
Heineman’s legacy began in 1980 when she won the Atari 2600 Space Invaders championship. At just 16, she joined Avalon Hill Games as a programmer. In 1983, she co-founded Interplay, initially called Interplay Productions, alongside Brian Fargo and others. Under her guidance, the company produced iconic titles, including The Bard’s Tale III: Thief of Fate.
