    Summary Points

    1. Effortless Tracking: Apple’s AirTag runs quietly in the background, using a replaceable CR2032 battery that lasts about a year, with alerts for low battery status sent to your iPhone.

    2. Simple Battery Replacement: Swapping the battery is tool-free and can be done in minutes by pressing, rotating, and securing the cover—no setup is needed afterward.

    3. Low Battery Alerts: Your iPhone notifies you when the battery is low, and the Find My app displays battery percentage—replace the battery promptly to maintain tracking functionality.

    4. Sustainable Disposal: Used lithium batteries should not be discarded in trash; check local guidelines for safe recycling options to minimize environmental impact.

How to Replace Your AirTag Battery: A Quick Guide

Apple’s AirTag helps track everyday items like keys and bags, operating quietly in the background. It uses a replaceable coin cell battery, which lasts about a year. When the battery runs low, your iPhone sends a notification, alerting you to replace it.

Replacing the battery is straightforward. Start by holding the AirTag with the polished side facing up. Then, press down on the metal cover and rotate it counterclockwise. After the cover stops moving, lift it off and remove the old battery.

Next, insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive side facing up. When seated correctly, the AirTag will chime, confirming power restoration. Replace the battery cover by aligning its tabs with the slots on the AirTag body. Press down and rotate the cover clockwise until it locks securely.

No extra setup is required after the battery swap. Your AirTag reconnects automatically to your Apple ID.

If you’re unsure whether your AirTag battery needs replacing, open the Find My app. Tap the Items tab and select your AirTag. A “Low Battery” message indicates it’s time for a replacement. If there’s no message, your battery is likely fine. Keep in mind that AirTags lack a screen, so monitoring battery levels can be tricky.

If your AirTag does not emit a sound after inserting a new battery, check to ensure it is oriented correctly. Additionally, make sure the cover is installed properly. If you still don’t hear a sound, try a different CR2032 battery. Look for batteries labeled “Compatible with AirTag” to ensure proper contact.

Typically, you should replace the battery about once a year. However, heavy use of features like Precision Finding may shorten battery life. Rely on iOS notifications for guidance, but consider replacing the battery if you anticipate long trips or storage.

Remember, used coin batteries should not go in household trash. Many retailers and recycling centers accept lithium batteries. Follow local recycling guidelines to dispose of them safely.

Replacing an AirTag battery requires no special tools and can be done in under a minute. By staying vigilant about low battery alerts, you can ensure your AirTag continues to help you keep track of your belongings effortlessly.
