    Top Highlights

    1. The author created a tool to automatically extract Kindle highlights, preprocess them (detect titles, remove duplicates), and generate structured summaries using an open-source AI model, saving significant time on manual summarization.
    2. Extraction relies on reading either the “My Clippings.txt” file or the “annotations.db” database, with parsing scripts that handle highlight organization, ordering, and filtering by book.
    3. The summaries are produced with a local AI model (like Ollama), structured into main thesis, key ideas, concepts, and practical takeaways, then exported as Markdown for easy review.
    4. This automation approach efficiently condenses extensive highlights into meaningful summaries, enabling quicker comprehension and reflection, exemplified by summarizing Malcolm Gladwell’s “Talking to Strangers” in seconds.

    Turning Highlights into Knowledge

Many readers highlight sections to remember key ideas. However, keeping track of all highlights can become overwhelming. To solve this, I built a simple AI pipeline. It extracts highlights from my Kindle, organizes them, and creates summaries. This way, I save time and make my highlights more useful. The process starts by retrieving the highlights from a file stored on the device. Using basic programming, I parse the highlights into a structured format. This allows filtering by book, removing duplicates, and organizing sections. As a result, I get a clear overview of what I highlighted in each book.

Using AI to Summarize and Learn

Once I have organized highlights, I use an open-source AI model to summarize them. The AI looks at all my highlights and generates a structured summary. It includes main ideas, key points, important concepts, and practical tips. The AI runs locally, keeping my data private. The output is formatted as a Markdown file. This file can be imported into note-taking apps, making review easy. By automating the summarization, I spend less time. Instead of manually writing summaries, I get quick, meaningful insights from my highlights.

    Balance and Practical Adoption

This system offers a balanced way to retain more from reading. It leverages tech skills without relying on paid tools or complex setups. While it might not replace deep note-taking, it offers a fast overview. Users should keep in mind that highlighted data can be messy or duplicated. Fine-tuning the filters and AI prompts can improve results. Adoption depends on familiarity with basic programming and AI models. Overall, this approach makes highlight management more effective. It helps turn scattered notes into organized knowledge and boosts long-term retention.
