    Quick Takeaways

    1. DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4 won’t launch in the US, continuing a trend.
    2. It’s mostly an upgrade from Pocket 3 with improved video quality.
    3. Key enhancements include better low-light performance, dynamic range, and storage.
    4. Buyers outside the US enjoy more features; US consumers await authorization.

    Evolution of Compact Filming

DJI continues to lead the way in compact filming technology with the Osmo Pocket 4. This new iteration improves on its predecessor, the Pocket 3, in just about every significant way. Improved video quality, enhanced battery life, and a generous 107GB of built-in storage set a new standard for vlogging cameras.

Yet, not all is seamless. The implementation of new features may feel somewhat familiar. The physical size changes minimally, and even the underlying gimbal hardware remains the same. The two additional buttons create a user-friendly experience but still require navigating a small touchscreen for many functions. This can frustrate those accustomed to more intuitive interfaces.

The upgraded camera sensor stands out. It captures stills at a stunning 37 megapixels and has significantly better performance in low-light conditions. Users capture excellent footage even in dimly lit environments. The dynamic range increase, now up to 14 stops, also enhances video quality. Despite the evolutionary upgrade, users may not find groundbreaking features, especially if they already own the Pocket 3.

    Market Challenges and Opportunities

The Osmo Pocket 4 faces challenges in the U.S. market. DJI cannot sell it there yet, following a similar trend with its drones. Buyers in the United States must rely on the Pocket 3 for now, while international consumers enjoy the benefits of the Pocket 4. For many, this delay reflects broader regulatory challenges affecting tech companies, particularly those with roots in China.

While the Pocket 4 does not shatter expectations, it rounds out the offerings for those new to the Osmo line or those still using older models. The improved battery life and internal storage bypass the need for extra accessories for many users. However, the built-in microphone still lacks quality compared to dedicated options. Users prioritizing audio quality may want to invest in external microphones, which DJI supports through various accessories.

The Osmo Pocket 4 represents a noteworthy step forward for compact vlogging cameras, providing improved functionality. While it may not spark widespread excitement among existing users, it remains an invaluable tool for newcomers. As the landscape shifts, DJI’s commitment to upgrading its offerings continues to benefit both enthusiasts and casual creators alike.
