    Quick Takeaways

    1. Sales Milestone: The PS5 has sold over 80 million units as of June 30, 2025, positioning it to potentially surpass PS3’s lifetime sales of 87 million.

    2. Quarterly Performance: In the last quarter, Sony sold 2.5 million PS5s, reflecting a slight decline from 2.8 million but a year-on-year increase of 100,000 units.

    3. Software Sales Growth: Approximately 66 million PS4 and PS5 games were sold, including nearly 7 million first-party titles, marking a significant 12 million year-on-year increase, with digital sales at an all-time high of 83%.

    4. Future Outlook: As the PS5 approaches its fifth anniversary, questions arise about reaching the critical 100 million sales benchmark amid challenges like rising prices due to inflation and potential manufacturing shifts to the US.

PS5 Sales Surge Past 80 Million Mark

Sony recently announced that PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 80 million units as of June 30, 2025. This impressive figure puts the PS5 just behind the Xbox 360, which sold 84 million units, and it is on track to potentially outpace the PS3, which reached around 87 million.

Sales for the latest quarter reached 2.5 million PS5s, a slight decline from 2.8 million in the previous quarter. However, compared to the same time last year, Sony sold about 100,000 more consoles. This steady demand highlights the console’s enduring popularity.

In addition to hardware sales, Sony experienced a significant boost in software. The company sold nearly 66 million PS4 and PS5 games this quarter, including approximately 7 million first-party titles. This marked a year-on-year increase of around 12 million in overall software sales. Notably, digital downloads comprised 83 percent of sales, indicating a strong shift toward online purchases.

Despite challenges such as fluctuating prices and rising costs in some regions, the PS5 continues to thrive. Earlier this year, Sony increased prices in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, citing a “challenging economic environment.” The company has not ruled out moving PS5 manufacturing to the U.S. in the future, which could mitigate some of those costs.

As the PS5 approaches its fifth anniversary this November, tech enthusiasts will be closely watching to see if it can reach the coveted 100 million sales milestone. The PS4 achieved this landmark in just over five years, making it the fastest console to do so at the time.

Sony’s focus on software, despite earlier setbacks with live service games, shows resilience. As the gaming landscape evolves, the PS5’s growing sales highlight a robust demand for quality gaming experiences.
