    Summary Points

    1. High cholesterol affects 40% of US adults, increasing stroke and heart attack risks.
    2. Full-fat dairy and red meats raise LDL cholesterol; opt for low-fat and lean proteins instead.
    3. Processed, fried foods, and trans fats worsen cholesterol levels and should be avoided.
    4. Lifestyle, genetics, and diet all influence cholesterol; moderation and healthy habits are key.

Foods to Limit or Avoid for Heart Health

High cholesterol affects many Americans, with two in five adults facing this issue. Eating the right foods can help manage it. Some foods, however, pose risks. For example, full-fat dairy products are high in saturated fats, which can raise bad cholesterol levels. These fats make it harder for your liver to remove cholesterol from your blood. Instead of full-fat options, choosing fat-free dairy like yogurt or kefir can help reduce saturated fat intake. This simple switch still provides essential nutrients and supports heart health.

Red meat is another food to watch. While it’s a good source of protein, red meat contains saturated fats that can increase cholesterol levels. Eating too much red meat can contribute to unhealthy plaque in your arteries. To improve heart health, consider using leaner options like chicken without skin, fish, beans, or lentils. These alternatives provide protein without the excess saturated fat. Additionally, skin on meat and processed meats like sausages or hot dogs are high in unhealthy fats and should be eaten sparingly.

Fried foods and highly processed meats also pose risks. Fried foods can contain trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and increase heart disease risk. Items like fried chicken, doughnuts, and fries often have these unhealthy fats. Processed meats such as smoked sausages and chips are low in beneficial nutrients and high in salt and unhealthy fats. For better health, opt for whole, minimally processed foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. Maintaining a balanced diet is essential for preventing cholesterol buildup and supporting overall well-being.
