    1. Neptune’s unique tilt and moons suggest a violent history involving Triton.
    2. Nereid’s orbit and spectrum indicate it is a native moon, not captured.
    3. Simulations show Triton once disrupted Neptune’s original moon system.
    4. Nereid may be a surviving moon displaced by Triton’s capture and chaos.

    Nereid: Neptune’s Resilient Oddity

Neptune stands out among the gas giants with its unique features. Its tilt is unusual, and its moons differ from those of other planets. Triton, Neptune’s largest moon, orbits in the opposite direction to Neptune itself. This suggests Triton was captured from the Kuiper Belt, not formed naturally. Unlike Triton, Nereid, Neptune’s second known moon, is also peculiar. Its orbit is highly elliptical and takes about 360 days to complete. For years, scientists believed Nereid was a captured Kuiper Belt Object (KBO). However, recent research using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) challenges that idea. The infrared data shows Nereid’s surface resembles native moons rather than captured KBOs. This indicates Nereid might be a natural moon of Neptune that was knocked into its current orbit.

    Implications of a Violent Past

Scientists used the REBOUND simulation software to model Neptune’s moon system. They started with a simple, circular setup and introduced Triton. As Triton was captured into a highly elliptical and retrograde orbit, it caused chaos. Most of Neptune’s original moons were destroyed or ejected. The debris from this destruction formed Neptune’s rings and smaller moons. In about 20% of models, Triton pushed an inner moon into a stable, elongated orbit. This scenario resembles Nereid’s current path. The data suggests Nereid could be an original moon that was tossed into its strange orbit by Triton’s capture. Because of its distant orbit, Nereid might still hold clues about Neptune’s past and the violent events that shaped its system. Confirming this theory requires sending a dedicated mission to Neptune, a goal scientists continue to pursue.
