    Fast Facts

    1. Meta’s AI division faced criticism for poor rollout and menial work, leading to employee dissatisfaction and a sense of being undervalued.
    2. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and executives acknowledged morale issues, vowing to improve communication, management, and career growth support.
    3. CTO Andrew Bosworth admitted they mishandled the AI team’s strategy and vision communication but justified drafting staff onto AI projects for speed.
    4. Meta plans to give employees more role flexibility, limit manager sizes, and implement AI coaching to rebuild trust and improve internal culture.

Meta Admits Its AI Rollout Was Flawed

Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, openly called the company’s recent AI reorganization “atrocious.” This honesty comes after reports of discontent within the AI division. The company formed a large new AI team to boost its generative models. However, workers felt the work was menial and unfulfilling, likening it to a “gulag.” Bosworth acknowledged that the company failed to communicate its vision clearly. As a result, employee trust and morale suffered. Meta now plans to improve how it manages and supports its AI team.

Recognizing the Need for Better Communication and Support

Bosworth pointed out that poor communication caused a disconnect between employees and leadership. To rebuild trust, Meta will focus on better communication, career growth, and a more cheerful work environment. The company will introduce measures like smaller management groups and limit employee switching between managers. Additionally, staff will have access to AI coaching tools to assist their development. These steps aim to foster a more positive internal culture and improve employee satisfaction.

    Balancing Speed and Employee Well-Being

Despite admitting errors, Bosworth defended the decision to quickly assemble the AI team. He stressed that working on less-than-fulfilling projects might be necessary at times for the company’s success. Meanwhile, some employees hesitant about the new AI projects can now seek different roles within Meta. This flexibility allows workers to find tasks better suited to their interests. Overall, Meta is making efforts to support its employees while pushing forward in the competitive AI landscape.
