    Gelsinger’s focus is on nanometer-scale beams of light. This approach offers a promising way to overcome the physical barriers faced when shrinking transistors. By using light at just 13.5 nanometers wavelength, manufacturers can fit more transistors into each chip—crucial as the limit of current technology draws near. He supports companies like xLight, working on innovative lithography methods, which has even attracted government funding.

    The potential of this technology excites many industry experts. If successful, it could lead to faster, more efficient chips. However, it’s still in development, and wide-scale adoption will take time. While promising, light-based lithography must prove to be reliable and cost-effective for mass manufacturing.
