    Scientists analyzed data from 724 lakes across the Northern Hemisphere, covering 2000 to 2022. They noticed a clear pattern: spring thaw dates are shifting earlier as temperatures rise, while fall freeze dates stay much the same. This means lakes are losing most of their ice season from one end. When temperatures cross certain thresholds, ice loss becomes much more sensitive. Instead of a gradual decline, it can suddenly accelerate—up to 22 times faster than before. Lakes near these thresholds face big risks, especially as climate change continues.

    If current emission trends continue, around 70% of lakes could lose their ice by the year 2100. Many regions are already feeling the effects. However, understanding these thresholds gives hope. It allows scientists to better predict which lakes are at risk and when they might lose their ice. This knowledge can help communities prepare and adapt faster.
