    Fast Facts

    1. ChatTJB is a social art project created by Tucker Bryant, where he responds to AI-like prompts himself, offering a human touch instead of machine-generated answers.
    2. The project gained rapid popularity after a $6,000 San Francisco billboard was put up, drawing over 30,000 queries and peaks of 5,000 prompts per hour.
    3. Bryant views ChatTJB as a commentary on our reliance on AI, warning about “cognitive surrender”—the tendency to accept AI outputs without critical thinking.
    4. By providing genuine human responses, Bryant offers a tender alternative to AI, emphasizing the value of human connection over expert advice in digital interactions.

A New Kind of Chatbot: A Person Instead of a Program

Imagine asking questions to a regular person instead of an AI. That is the idea behind ChatTJB. Instead of relying on a computer program, a man answers your questions directly. His name is Tucker Bryant, and he is 32. He launched ChatTJB as an art project. It is different from other chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude. These use large language models (LLMs). Bryant, however, answers questions himself. This makes the experience more human and personal. Many users are curious about the idea of chatting with a person in real time.

How It Works and Why People Use It

People send all kinds of questions to ChatTJB. Some ask for funny images, like a skunk in sunglasses. Others seek simple advice, such as how to fry an egg. The website gets thousands of questions daily. During its busiest time, it received about 5,000 prompts an hour. Bryant says he created ChatTJB to show how people might rely less on AI. Some users initially saw it as a joke, but then they started sharing more serious questions. In this way, ChatTJB becomes a space for genuine conversation. While Bryant admits he’s not a great artist or expert, he believes the value lies in talking to a real person.

Balancing Fun and Risks with Person-Powered AI

Bryant sees ChatTJB mainly as a commentary on today’s tech world. He notes that AI can sometimes cause “cognitive surrender.” This means people stop thinking critically and just accept AI answers. For instance, he wondered if he should trust AI advice about the weather. He worries that relying too much on AI could weaken people’s judgment. Still, many users enjoy chatting with a human. They find comfort and honesty in real responses. Ultimately, ChatTJB offers a different way to connect, blending art, technology, and personal touch.
