Maximize Your MacBook’s Battery Life with These Simple Settings

    Quick Takeaways

    1. Check battery health and enables Optimize Battery Charging to prolong lifespan.
    2. Use Low Power Mode and adjust display settings to extend battery life.
    3. Monitor and close power-hungry apps with Activity Monitor and system tools.
    4. Tweak browsing and background settings to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

Maintaining your MacBook’s battery health is essential for long-term performance. Start by checking your battery’s current capacity. Head to System Settings > Battery. Look at Battery Health to see its percentage compared to the original capacity. If it’s 100%, your battery is in good shape. A number below 80% signals it’s time to consider a replacement. Apple recommends replacing the battery when it drops below this level and shows a service warning.

To extend your battery’s lifespan, enable Optimize Battery Charging. This setting caps charging at 80%, reducing wear over time. You can access it in System Settings > Battery > Charging. Keep an eye on the menu bar’s Battery icon for quick updates, including which apps use the most power. It can also alert you to energy modes, helping you make smarter decisions. If this icon isn’t visible, go to System Settings > Menu Bar to activate it.

Using Low Power Mode is the most effective way to stretch your battery. Go to System Settings > Battery > Energy Mode. Set it to Low Power, especially if your battery is aging or if you need extra hours. Even if your Mac is fully charged, this setting keeps energy-saving measures active.

Adjust display and keyboard settings as well. Lower your screen brightness in System Settings > Battery > Options, and set the display to turn off after a short period of inactivity. Turning on “Slightly dim the display on battery” helps conserve energy. For video streaming, turn on “Optimize video streaming while on battery” to reduce power consumed during playback. Reducing keyboard backlight brightness and turning it off after inactivity earns minor savings, but every bit helps.

Monitor apps through Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities. Check the Energy tab to find power-hungry apps. Consider closing or uninstalling unnecessary programs. Review Login Items in System Settings > General to stop background apps that drain power unnecessarily. Be cautious—some background processes are essential—and avoid shutting down critical apps indiscriminately.

Using Safari over Chrome can significantly cut battery drain. Adjust browser settings—disable auto-play videos in Safari’s Websites settings and turn on “Energy Saver” in Chrome’s Performance menu. Additionally, turning off auto-play for animated images in System Settings > Accessibility > Motion prevents unnecessary power use.

Finally, manage background activities. In System Settings > Battery > Options, restrict network wake-up to when your Mac is plugged in. Review Location Services in Privacy & Security, allowing only necessary apps like Find My or Weather. These tweaks combined can extend your MacBook’s uptime, making your device more reliable throughout the day.
