    Essential Insights

    1. Platforms are deploying stronger safeguards, leading to a decrease in sensitive or harmful content like hate speech and sexual harassment.
    2. Different AI models are favored for specific tasks: Grok and Gemini for information retrieval, Anthropic for coding, Gemini for social interactions, and ChatGPT for homework help.
    3. Users interact differently with models depending on their version; GPT-3.5 prompts shorter chats, while GPT-4o encourages longer, more emotional exchanges.
    4. The research dataset covers over 85,000 conversations from 5,000 users across seven models, but big labs analyze millions more, highlighting data scale gaps.

Understanding How People Use AI Is Still a Challenge

Despite the rapid growth of AI tools, we still don’t fully understand how people use them. Researchers analyzed thousands of conversations from different platforms, but these are just small samples. Many interactions are hidden inside proprietary data that companies keep private. As a result, it is hard to see the big picture. This makes it difficult to know what features are most useful or how users are really benefitting from AI. However, some patterns are emerging, showing diverse ways people turn to AI for different needs.

    Different AIs for Different Tasks

The research shows that users prefer certain models for specific tasks. For instance, some turn to one AI for finding information, especially on news and politics. Others use different tools for coding or social roleplay. For example, users often choose one platform to help with homework, while another is favored for chatting or role-playing. Interestingly, different versions of the same model also change how people interact. Shorter conversations happen with older versions, while newer ones tend to lead to longer, more involved exchanges. These choices reflect how people adapt AI to match their needs.

The Data Still Doesn’t Tell the Full Story

While some companies have analyzed millions of conversations, this still isn’t enough to understand usage fully. Proprietary data remains largely behind closed doors. This limits transparency and makes it hard to see the full picture. Still, ongoing research shows that users are exploring AI in many ways, often for different purposes and with different models. As AI tools evolve, so will the ways people use them—yet, much remains to be discovered about their true impact.
