    Essential Insights

    1. Cannabis users experience psychosis 2.5 years earlier on average, with the gap widening in older adults, suggesting cumulative harm over time.
    2. The study finds no safe age to start using cannabis, challenging the myth that delaying use until adulthood reduces risk.
    3. Earlier psychosis onset can disrupt education, career, and relationships, emphasizing the importance of delaying or limiting cannabis exposure.
    4. Findings support broader warnings and regulation of cannabis across all ages to mitigate risks of early psychosis.

Cannabis Use and Early Psychosis: What the Science Shows

A large analysis finds that cannabis users experience psychosis about two and a half years earlier than nonusers. This gap grows larger for older adults. Psychosis affects how people see and understand reality. It can cause hallucinations or strong beliefs that clash with facts. Usually, psychosis appears in late teens or early twenties. But it can start later, especially in adults. Starting psychosis earlier can disrupt important life steps, like education, work, and relationships. The new research combined many studies to find this pattern. It looked at data from over 180 studies, involving thousands of cannabis users and nonusers.

The Impact of Age and Exposure on Psychosis Onset

The study shows that cannabis use links to earlier psychosis across all age groups, but the effect gets bigger in older adults. For those under 20, the difference is small. However, from age 25 onward, cannabis users tend to develop psychosis much earlier. Longer use may build up harm over time. Older users often have used cannabis for many years, which might explain the stronger link. Experts believe that repeated exposure lowers the age when symptoms appear. This suggests cannabis might play a direct role in triggering psychosis, not just be a coincidence. Still, more research is needed to fully understand this connection.

    Practical Warnings and Future Outlooks

Earlier psychosis can interfere with personal growth. It might happen when people are finishing school or starting careers. Missing these chances can affect long-term stability. If we can delay psychosis even a little, it could help people reach key milestones. This findings mean warnings about cannabis should include advice for adults, not just teenagers. Regulating cannabis could help control product strength and inform users about risks. While this research shows a link, it does not prove causation. Other factors, like genetics or trauma, might also influence these outcomes. Still, the evidence pushes for more awareness and better policies to protect mental health.
