NASA seeks industry proposals to develop lunar power and resource technology.
Goals include establishing sustainable power, oxygen, and in-situ manufacturing systems.
Key focus areas: solar arrays, in-situ oxygen extraction, nuclear generators, and nanomaterials.
Effort promotes U.S. leadership, industry collaboration, and international partnership.

NASA Calls for Proposals to Accelerate Lunar Surface Technologies

NASA is actively seeking innovative proposals to speed up the development of key technologies needed for lunar exploration. The agency aims to build a sustainable presence on the Moon, particularly in the region near the South Pole. This effort is part of a broader plan to establish a human base and explore deeper space.

Announced on September 8, the call targets specific capability gaps. These include power generation, oxygen extraction, and manufacturing materials on the lunar surface. These technologies are vital for supporting future missions and making long-term human activity possible on the Moon.

Focus Areas for Lunar Technology Development

The solicitation, called the Lunar Enabling Infrastructure Accelerator, is part of NASA’s NextSTEP-3 program. It focuses on five main technology areas. The goal is to mature these capabilities and demonstrate their practicality for lunar use.

First, solar array technology is a priority. NASA wants vertical solar arrays that can generate steady power, manage energy efficiently, and store it for use during lunar night cycles. Second, oxygen production from lunar regolith—moon dust and rocks—is crucial. Extracting breathable oxygen from the surface materials will reduce the need to bring supplies from Earth.

Third, NASA seeks to develop radioisotope Stirling generators. These nuclear-powered devices use heat from radioactive materials to generate electricity. They can operate in the Moon’s harsh environment, including the dark, dusty regions. Fourth, the agency is interested in advancing in-space manufacturing. These capabilities will lessen reliance on Earth resupply missions and increase mission resilience. Lastly, innovative nanomaterials production is targeted. High-quality nanomaterials can improve equipment and structures on the Moon.

    Open Competition and Industry Collaboration

NASA emphasizes a competitive, open process, encouraging participation from industry, universities, and nonprofit groups. International partners are also invited, as long as they participate through U.S.-led teams. The agency intends to draw from the results, including technical data and demonstrations, to guide future contracts and technology development.

This initiative supports the idea that collaboration among private companies, academia, and government is essential for lunar exploration. While some technologies may face challenges in adapting terrestrial solutions for space, NASA’s approach aims to find practical, reliable options for future lunar missions.
