    1. An analemma shows the Sun’s position over a year at the same place.
    2. It results from Earth’s axial tilt and elliptical orbit.
    3. The shape is a figure-8, with solstices at top and bottom.
    4. The upcoming equinox will occur in two days, marking equal day and night.

Understanding the Analemma Over the Callanish Stones

The recent Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) highlights a fascinating image titled “Analemma over the Callanish Stones.” The picture shows the Sun’s position in the sky over a year, recorded at the same time each day from a fixed location. The result is a striking figure-eight shape known as an analemma. This shape reveals how the Sun’s position changes due to Earth’s tilt and orbit.

If you stood outside at the same time every day and captured a photo that included the Sun, you would see it shift across the sky. Over a year, these positions trace out the analemma’s figure-eight. The image was created from photos taken every few days near noon, close to the village of Callanish. In the foreground, there are ancient Callanish Stones, a stone circle built around 2700 BC. It’s uncertain if the stones were placed with astronomical intentions, but they remain a lasting monument from the Bronze Age.

The shape of the analemma is shaped by two main factors. First, Earth’s axis is tilted at about 23.5 degrees. Second, Earth’s orbit around the Sun is not a perfect circle but an ellipse. These factors cause the Sun’s apparent position to vary throughout the year. During solstices, the Sun appears at the top or bottom of the analemma. The image was taken near the December solstice, so the Sun shows up close to the bottom of the figure-eight. Equinoxes, when day and night are nearly equal, happen in the middle points of the analemma. The upcoming equinox, occurring in two days, marks a change of seasons and is celebrated in many cultures worldwide.

This visual representation of Earth’s motion is more than a diagram; it embodies the intricate dance between our planet and its star. The Callanish Stones, with their ancient origin, add a historical and cultural layer to the natural phenomena captured in this image. The analemma serves as a reminder of Earth’s complex orbit and tilt—factors that influence our seasons, climate, and timekeeping.
