AI-Friendly Internet Could Make the Web Worse for People

    Quick Takeaways

    1. Personal AI agents are surging: They can shop, book, and negotiate online, with agent traffic rapidly increasing.
    2. Websites are pushing back: Many block agents over security, customer-service overload, or advertising concerns.
    3. Commerce may open the door: Retailers like Shopify are creating agent-friendly ways to shop and check out.
    4. The human web could suffer: Expect clunkier browsing, more identity checks, personalized prices, and less-transparent recommendations.

Agents are becoming a third kind of visitor

People built most websites for human visitors. Now personal AI agents can book flights, compare hotels and shop on a person’s behalf. OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse have helped bring these tools to more users. Muse reached 5 million downloads in its first month, while agent-driven web traffic tripled from August to September.

Agents act for people, but they move at machine speed. That makes them different from both human visitors and traditional bots.

    Convenience meets resistance

Agents could save time and help people find better deals. Yet many websites block them, in part because they struggle to distinguish useful agents from harmful bots. Users have reported problems with sites such as Pizza Hut and Yelp. Amazon has blocked Muse’s agents and is appealing a ruling in its dispute with Perplexity.

There are practical concerns, too. Agents could flood customer service teams with refund requests or price negotiations. They may also make it harder for retailers to tell whether people or bots saw an ad. Still, online stores have a business reason to welcome agent shoppers. Shopify, for example, is giving agents dedicated checkout lanes.

The next web must work for people, too

If more people adopt agents, websites will likely adapt. That could make routine tasks easier. But it could also leave human visitors with clumsier pages, repeated identity checks or prices that vary across agents. Ads and platform commissions might also shape recommendations without users noticing.

Those outcomes are not inevitable. Websites can set clear rules, show how recommendations earn money and keep prices easy to compare. The challenge is to welcome agents without turning the web into a place where people feel like guests.
