    Top Highlights

    1. Goodix expands fingerprint authentication options for AI and IoT edge devices.
    2. MoC matches fingerprints on-module, boosting privacy, speed, and energy efficiency.
    3. MoC + eSE protects credentials with hardware isolation, FIDO2, and TLS 1.3.
    4. Capacitive, optical, and ultrasonic sensors suit diverse device designs and uses.

    Identity moves to the edge

As phones, wearables, robots and smart-home devices gain AI features, they need reliable ways to confirm who is using them. Goodix has introduced a fingerprint security portfolio for these devices, with options that match different designs and security needs. The everyday benefit could be simpler access to devices and services. Still, biometric tools must be implemented carefully; no single feature can prevent every kind of attack.

    Three layers of protection

Goodix offers Match-on-Host, Match-on-Chip and a new Match-on-Chip combination with an embedded secure element, or eSE. With Match-on-Chip, fingerprint data is processed and matched inside the sensor module, rather than on the main processor. That can reduce the processor’s workload and support responsive, battery-conscious devices.

For stronger protection, the eSE stores sensitive credentials, such as account tokens, apart from the host processor. Encrypted communication links it to the fingerprint module. The design supports FIDO2 authentication and TLS 1.3, but its real-world security will also depend on sound software and device makers’ implementation.

    More choices, with practical limits

Capacitive, optical and ultrasonic sensors give manufacturers more options. They can support curved surfaces, under-display use or screenless devices, including designs intended to recognize wet or oily fingers. That flexibility may help bring secure sign-in to more products, from laptops to smart-home controls.

The broader promise is convenience without treating security as an afterthought. For AI devices that use cloud services, protected credentials could help limit exposure on the device. IDC projects China’s secure AI agent application market will reach $1.6 billion by 2028. That forecast signals growing interest, though adoption will hinge on cost, usability and trust—not technology alone.
