Google Quietly Links Your Phone Number to Other Android Accounts

    Fast Facts

    1. Since September 2025, Android automatically verifies a phone’s number and links it to every Google account on the device—including work, secondary, and accounts added later.

    2. Google says linked numbers support account recovery, RCS messaging, and other services, but it hasn’t explained why the number must be attached to every account.

    3. Users can turn off automatic verification in Settings → Google → All services → Phone number verification. Existing links must be removed from each account separately.

    4. Disabling verification can limit features: Google Messages may fall back from RCS to SMS, and the number may no longer support quick account recovery.

Google Is Quietly Linking Your Phone Number to Other Android Accounts

If you use more than one Google account on an Android phone, your number may connect to all of them — without a prompt asking you first.

Google has turned on automatic phone number verification by default since September 2025. During setup, an Android phone can verify the number on its SIM and attach it to every Google account signed in on the device. That includes work and secondary accounts.

Some users learned about the change only after Google sent them an email confirming verification. The feature can make useful services work more smoothly. However, it also raises fair questions about how widely a phone number should travel across accounts.

One number can reach every account on the phone

Google’s support information says automatic verification applies to accounts already on the phone and accounts added later. Change SIM cards, and the new number can attach to those accounts, too. Google and the mobile carrier may also verify numbers again from time to time. Depending on the carrier, that process could lead to charges.

The company links phone number verification to several practical tools. A verified number can help with account recovery, RCS messaging, finding a lost device, emergency location services and Quick Share. Google also says verification supports Better sharing, which can help people receive calls, messages and notifications about content shared to their number.

In October 2025, Google added another recovery option called Sign in with Mobile Number. The Android feature can identify Google accounts connected to a phone number. Then, it can help the owner regain access by using the lock screen passcode from a previous device.

Those links may save time when someone loses access to an account or switches phones. Still, convenience does not answer the central question: Why does Google need to attach one number to every account on the same device? Google’s public explanation lists features that use verified numbers, but it does not clearly explain why the system applies across all accounts.

Useful connections come with unanswered privacy questions

A phone number can act as a key to several services. That can simplify recovery and help RCS messaging connect. Google Messages requires phone number verification for RCS. Without it, conversations may fall back to SMS, which lacks some RCS features. The trade-off matters more now that end-to-end encrypted RCS chats have started rolling out between Android phones and iPhones.

There is also a possible connection to advertising. Google account settings include an option that lets the company use a phone number across its services to make ads and other services more relevant. But Google has not explained whether that option applies to numbers that Android adds automatically. That distinction matters. A number’s presence on an account does not, by itself, prove that Google uses it for advertising.

Google says it does not sell personal data, including phone numbers. It has also tested a policy in some regions that gives new accounts 5 gigabytes of free storage when users do not link a phone number, rather than the usual 15 GB. Google has not said that this test applies everywhere or that automatic verification triggers it.

The benefits are real. So is the need for a clear choice. People may welcome easier recovery and richer messaging, while others may prefer to keep work, personal and backup accounts separate. Google’s explanation would be stronger if it spelled out what happens to each linked number and gave users a straightforward way to choose which accounts receive it.

How to turn off automatic verification

To stop future automatic verification, open Settings on your Android phone. Tap Google, then All services. Under Privacy & security, choose Phone number verification and turn off Verify phone numbers automatically. Some phones call the Google section Google services and preferences.

That switch does not remove numbers Google already linked. To remove one, open the relevant Google account settings. Go to Personal info, choose Phone, and delete the number there. Repeat the steps for each account where you want it removed.

Before you change the setting, consider what you rely on. Turning off verification can affect RCS messaging and quick account recovery. You may also lose other features that depend on a verified number. In return, you gain more control over which accounts carry that piece of personal information.

The choice should fit the way you use your phone. If you value seamless recovery and RCS, keeping verification on may make sense. If you use separate accounts for work and personal life, reviewing each account’s phone settings can help you decide where the number belongs.
