    Fast Facts

    1. Formal verification is catching hard-to-find bugs: Apple says some flaws in its core encryption library might have been missed without it.
    2. AI could lower verification costs: Startups aim to use AI to write specifications and help prepare code for mathematical checking.
    3. Demand is rising, but funding is uncertain: Open-source maintainers and verification firms want sustained support as interest outstrips available expertise.
    4. Trust still needs human judgment: Experts warn AI-written specifications could create false confidence, even as they see verification as vital for safer software.

The ‘Pain in the Ass’ Math That Could Save Vibe Coding From Itself

More than a second set of eyes

Formal verification uses math to check whether software follows clearly defined rules. It can catch flaws that ordinary code review may miss. A major technology company’s security team said verification uncovered problems in its encryption library that it could not have found another way.

That promise comes with a bottleneck. The company also limits how quickly it adds code because people still need to review it. Better tools could help, but they do not erase the need for careful oversight.

    AI could cut the busywork

AI tools may help developers describe what software should do, then prepare those rules for specialized math programs to test. For example, a sorting function should change the order of a table’s items without losing or adding any.

This could make verification less costly and bring it to more projects. Some security leaders say they might pay AI companies for code that has passed those checks. Still, many have not tried formal verification, so its value at scale remains uncertain.

    Trust needs a firm foundation

Open-source teams are testing AI-assisted checks, including for encryption software. But verification takes time, and maintainers need steady funding. Relying on technology companies’ goodwill is not a durable plan.

There is also a risk: A flawed specification can earn a clean result while missing the real problem. Verification checks code against its rules; it cannot guarantee the rules make sense. Used with human judgment and long-term support, however, the math could help make fast, AI-assisted coding safer.
