AI Agent Tools That Make Decisions Too

    Essential Insights

    1. Delegate routine workflows: A decision model inside a tool can choose and run the next lookup, instead of making the LLM agent manage every step.

    2. Keep the agent focused: The agent makes one call to order_specialist; the tool gathers evidence, decides when it’s done, and returns the results.

    3. See the speed-and-cost payoff: In the delayed-order example, the hybrid setup reached the same recommendation in 8.9 seconds—about 2.85× faster and 24.7% cheaper than direct tool chaining.

    4. Use it when steps repeat: If an agent routinely chains predictable operations, consider moving those intermediate decisions into a tool.

Let the Tool Handle the Routine Choices

Agents often call several tools to complete one task. After each result, the language model must decide what to do next. Those choices may seem obvious, but each round can add time and cost.

A decision model can manage that sequence inside a single tool. For a delayed order, an order-specialist tool might check order details, warehouse notes, inventory and shipping options. It then returns the gathered evidence to the agent. The agent can focus on understanding the customer and explaining the findings.

    One Investigation, Fewer Agent Calls

In a test case, the specialist tool investigated an order and found a potential way to meet the customer’s deadline. The agent called the tool once; a decision model inside it selected five information lookups and then stopped.

The same task took 8.9 seconds with the specialist tool, compared with 25.4 seconds when the agent chose among six backend tools directly. The test also reported 24.7% lower model cost. That is a useful result, not a universal guarantee: it came from one synthetic example, and other tasks may produce different outcomes.

    Choose the Pattern With Care

This approach works best when a task repeats a clear sequence of small decisions. It can reduce needless back-and-forth and give the agent a simpler interface. However, teams still need to limit what the tool can access, check its choices and keep a record of the evidence it uses. They should also stop the process when the tool lacks enough information.

For straightforward workflows, delegating routine decisions can make agents faster and less costly. For complex or sensitive work, keeping more decisions with the main agent—or requiring human review—may be the wiser choice.
