Summary Points
AbbVie beat third-quarter sales and earnings expectations, lifting its full-year EPS outlook again.
Immunology sales grew 16%, as Skyrizi and Rinvoq gains more than offset Humira declines.
Neuroscience portfolio revenue rose 19%, led by Vraylar, Vyalev, Qulipta, and Ubrelvy.
CEO Rob Michael favors smaller bolt-on acquisitions, despite ample capacity for larger deals.
Immunology powers a strong quarter
AbbVie beat Wall Street expectations in the third quarter, reporting $17.4 billion in sales and earnings of $3.82 per share. It also raised its full-year earnings forecast.
Immunology remained the main engine. Sales of Skyrizi rose 23% to $5.7 billion, while Rinvoq grew 24% to $2.7 billion. Together, those gains more than offset a 31% drop in Humira sales. For patients, the expanding portfolio may mean more treatment options for immune-related conditions, though sales growth alone does not show how well a medicine works for each person.
Neuroscience adds momentum
AbbVie’s neuroscience business grew 19% to $3.4 billion. Vraylar sales topped $1 billion, while migraine medicines Qulipta and Ubrelvy also posted strong growth. Sales of Parkinson’s disease treatment Vyalev doubled.
These results point to broader investment in treatments for brain and nervous system conditions. However, commercial growth is not the same as scientific progress or better outcomes. Patients’ needs, access and real-world results will remain key measures of impact.
Small deals over another megadeal
The company’s aesthetics business was a weak spot. Juvederm sales fell 12%. AbbVie also carries about $60 billion in net debt, even as it says it has room to pursue acquisitions.
Chief Executive Rob Michael signaled a preference for smaller, “bolt-on” deals that add depth to existing businesses, rather than another purchase on the scale of its $63 billion Allergan deal in 2020. That approach could bring promising medicines into AbbVie’s portfolio while limiting the risks of a major acquisition. For patients, the potential benefit is a wider range of treatments; the test will be whether new products deliver meaningful improvements in care.
