    Fast Facts

    1. Speed without good judgment in AI can lead to wrong decisions and potential harm, emphasizing the importance of context.
    2. A well-designed data fabric is essential to provide context, enabling safe AI scaling, decision coordination, and alignment with business priorities.
    3. Traditional data strategies focusing only on aggregation often lose critical context, which affects AI decision-making accuracy.
    4. Preserving context across processes, policies, and data—what Khan calls the “context premium”—is vital for AI to make strategic, correct decisions.

AI Needs Context to Deliver Business Value

Artificial intelligence (AI) can analyze data quickly and produce results in seconds. However, speed alone doesn’t guarantee success. Without proper context, AI may give answers that are fast but wrong. For example, AI systems can make decisions that seem logical but don’t match business goals. This happens when they lack enough understanding of the bigger picture.

According to industry experts, having a strong data fabric is crucial. A data fabric is a connected system that links data across different applications and sources. It isn’t just about storing data; it helps preserve the meaning behind the information. By doing so, companies can ensure AI makes better decisions aligned with real-world priorities. This leads to smarter automation that benefits the entire organization.

Many companies are already changing how they handle data. Instead of piling data into one place, they are connecting information across clouds, systems, and processes. This approach keeps the context intact—such as policies, customer information, and supply chain details. As a result, AI systems can better understand the importance of each data point.

Traditional data strategies focused mainly on gathering and storing data. Over time, this method improved reporting and analysis. Yet, it often lost the meaning of the data—what it signifies about the business or decisions. For instance, two companies might both analyze inventory data, but one with added context can make smarter supply decisions. The company that understands policy implications and customer priorities will make better choices.

In short, context is key. Without it, AI may move quickly but in the wrong direction. Implementing a data fabric that maintains this context provides a significant advantage. It helps AI systems work smarter, not just faster, helping businesses achieve real value.
