Six billion chips mark a turning point

More than 6 billion chips have shipped using Alibaba’s XuanTie processor designs, a milestone that highlights the growing reach of RISC-V. Alibaba’s research division announced the figure at a RISC-V industry gathering in Shenzhen on Monday.

RISC-V is an open standard for designing processors. Unlike proprietary designs, it lets companies build and adapt chips without relying on a single chip-architecture owner. That flexibility can lower costs and give developers more control over their products.

The milestone does not mean Alibaba made or sold every chip. Instead, it reflects the number of shipped chips built on designs based on its XuanTie architecture. Those chips can support many kinds of devices, from everyday electronics to more demanding computing systems.

AI and autos will test the open approach

Alibaba now aims to expand XuanTie’s role in artificial intelligence and automotive systems. Both fields need processors that can handle specific tasks efficiently. Cars, for example, rely on chips for safety features, navigation, and driver assistance. AI systems also need computing power close to where they collect and use data.

An open design standard could help companies tailor processors to these needs. It may also reduce their reliance on foreign chip-design technologies, a concern for Chinese firms facing US-led export restrictions. However, openness alone does not guarantee success. Chipmakers still need reliable software, strong security, and broad developer support. Automakers and technology companies also require years of testing before they trust new hardware in critical systems.

RISC-V adoption may grow quickly. Industry forecasts suggest that global shipments of RISC-V processors could rise by nearly 30 per cent each year and reach about one-quarter of the processor market by 2030. Forecasts, however, are not guarantees. Established designs, production limits, and software compatibility will shape how far the standard spreads.

If RISC-V gains ground, its impact could reach well beyond chip companies. More choice may help lower the cost of connected devices and bring useful technology to more people. The 6-billion-chip milestone shows that the open approach has moved beyond an experiment. Its next test is whether it can deliver dependable, practical systems in the places people increasingly rely on technology.
