Bhutan Invests in Mindfulness Economic Hub with 10,000 BTC
The Kingdom of Bhutan has made a bold commitment to enhance its economic future by allocating 10,000 BTC—approximately $1 billion—to develop the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). This initiative represents a significant leap in Bhutan’s integration of bitcoin and modern digital technologies.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck introduced the Bitcoin Development Pledge during his National Day Address. This strategy underscores a vision to empower the people of Bhutan while ensuring sustainable growth for future generations.
GMC stands to be an innovative hub focused on mindfulness, sustainability, and creativity. Officials state that the planned investments will establish a financially connected environment that encourages collaboration. The hub seeks partnerships from both local and international digital asset entities.
“We consider our Bitcoin holdings as long-term investments,” remarked Jigdrel Singay, Board Director at GMC. The government plans to manage these assets carefully, exploring options like collateralization and yield management to maintain their value.
In addition to supporting economic development, GMC aims to provide regulatory clarity and seamless financial connectivity. The region will be equipped with a digital infrastructure that facilitates crypto-based payments across various services, further integrating digital assets into Bhutan’s economic model.
Bhutan’s progressive stance on cryptocurrency is not new. Since 2017, the country has been mining BTC using clean energy sources. Furthermore, it has introduced TER, a sovereign-backed token linked to physical gold. These steps underline Bhutan’s commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of its society.
As King Wangchuck stated, “This commitment is for our people, our youth, and our nation.” With this pledge, Bhutan aims to become a leader in adopting digital technologies, setting an example for other nations on how to use cryptocurrency for public good.
