    Quick Takeaways

    1. Defamation Judgment: Ben Armstrong, aka “BitBoy,” ordered to pay $2.8 million to Kevin O’Leary for failing to defend against defamation claims regarding false murder accusations.

    2. Background Incident: Armstrong accused O’Leary and his wife of involvement in a fatal boating accident in 2019, despite O’Leary’s innocence and his wife’s acquittal.

    3. Legal Challenges: The court denied Armstrong’s plea to overturn the judgment, citing his consistent failure to engage and ongoing mental health issues as reasons for his inaction.

    4. Career Decline: Armstrong’s legal troubles and arrests since 2023 have severely tarnished his reputation, leading to his removal from the BitBoy Crypto brand and heightened controversies.

Court Orders Ben Armstrong to Pay $2.8 Million in Defamation Case

A U.S. federal court has handed down a significant ruling against crypto influencer Ben Armstrong, widely known as “BitBoy.” On Thursday, Judge Beth Bloom of the Southern District of Florida ordered Armstrong to pay $2.8 million after he failed to respond to a defamation lawsuit filed by investor and television personality Kevin O’Leary.

The damages include $78,000 for reputational harm, $750,000 for emotional distress, and $2 million in punitive damages. Armstrong’s inaction during the proceedings prompted the default judgment, which underscores the seriousness of his allegations against O’Leary.

    Background of the Case

The legal troubles started when Armstrong made severe accusations against O’Leary and his wife on social media in March 2025. He alleged that O’Leary had committed murder related to a fatal boating incident in Ontario in 2019. Two people died in the collision, but O’Leary was merely a passenger at the time and faced no charges. Meanwhile, his wife, Linda O’Leary, was acquitted of any wrongdoing after a 13-day trial.

Armstrong went further by publishing O’Leary’s private phone number and urging his followers to contact him. These actions resulted in a temporary suspension from social media platforms.

    Legal Challenges Continue

After being ordered to pay the damages, Armstrong sought to overturn the judgment in January 2026. He claimed that mental health issues and previous incarceration caused his absence from the case. However, the court dismissed this request, citing that he had adequate opportunity to engage in the proceedings.

This ruling adds to Armstrong’s growing list of legal challenges. Reportedly, he has faced multiple arrests since 2023, including a fugitive warrant related to threats made against a judge. As a result, he was removed from the BitBoy Crypto brand in August 2023 following concerns regarding substance abuse.

Armstrong’s fall from prominence has been marked by controversy, including instances of promoting dubious projects and a high-profile dispute with another YouTuber.

As the crypto space evolves, such legal battles spotlight the need for accountability among content creators and influencers. They serve as a reminder of how personal actions can affect not only reputations but also broader technological developments within the industry.
