    Fast Facts

    1. ByteDance’s net profit dropped over 70% in 2025 due to heavy AI investments, despite overall growth.
    2. Overseas revenue surged nearly 50%, now accounting for over 30% of total (up from 25%), driven mainly by TikTok Shop.
    3. TikTok Shop’s gross merchandise value grew nearly 70%, boosting international revenues significantly.
    4. Profit margins slightly declined in late 2025 due to slower Douyin e-commerce growth and higher investments in new ventures.

ByteDance’s Profits Drop Amid Heavy Investment in AI

In 2025, ByteDance experienced a significant dip in its net profit, falling more than 70 percent. This decline reflects the company’s heavy investment in artificial intelligence (AI). Despite the profit drop, the company’s revenue continued to grow, thanks mainly to its expanding overseas market. ByteDance has prioritized AI development to stay competitive, but this comes with increased costs. However, for the first time, over 30 percent of its revenue now comes from outside China. This shift highlights how ByteDance is increasingly focusing on global growth. Importantly, the overall figures appear more positive when adjusted for stock option costs, indicating that its core operations remain strong. Still, the sharp profit decline underscores the high costs associated with pushing into cutting-edge AI and new business areas.

Overseas Markets and TikTok Shop Drive Growth

At the same time, ByteDance’s overseas revenues rose sharply by nearly 50 percent. This growth outpaced the 20 percent increase seen within China. Notably, TikTok Shop, the company’s e-commerce platform, played a key role in this expansion. Last year, TikTok Shop’s gross merchandise value surged by almost 70 percent. This growth indicates that more people are shopping directly through TikTok’s platform, elevating its influence in international markets. The company’s vice-president of Douyin explained that while profits faced some pressure in the second half of the year, mainly due to investments in emerging businesses and slower growth in Douyin’s e-commerce segment, the overall trend remains optimistic. These developments suggest that TikTok Shop is becoming a vital engine for international growth, helping ByteDance balance its focus on innovation with practical revenue generation.
