    Chinese Chipmakers Push for Local Equipment, Facing New Commercial Challenges

Several new wafer fabrication plants in China now include specific goals to use more local equipment. For example, one large plant in Wuxi plans to achieve 80% localisation. This aggressive target highlights China’s determination to grow its semiconductor industry independently. However, while the move is promising, it also presents real challenges. Producing reliable, high-volume manufacturing equipment requires solving complex technical issues. The industry must now transition from simply developing these tools to making them consistently trustworthy across multiple machines. This step is crucial for gaining trust from top overseas clients and for maintaining high manufacturing standards. Ultimately, China’s success will depend on whether its toolmakers can deliver equipment that meets international quality and reliability standards, not just local needs.

    The Road to Widely Accepted Domestic Technology Lies in Reliability and Scalability

    As Chinese chipmakers aim for full localisation, industry leaders recognize the importance of shifting from initial development to large-scale, commercial use. Making one functioning machine is relatively straightforward; however, creating hundreds or thousands that perform identically is far more difficult. Manufacturing in high-volume fabs demands absolute consistency across multiple chambers and processes. This challenge is often referred to as moving into a “2.0 era,” where the focus is on building dependable tools that can replace established foreign suppliers. Success here would mark a significant milestone, proving that Chinese equipment can compete on a global scale. Furthermore, achieving this level of reliability could boost confidence from international clients, encouraging even widespread adoption of domestically produced tools. At a broader level, crossing this threshold would also contribute to the global journey of technological self-sufficiency. It emphasizes that innovation must be paired with practicality—making tools that are not only cutting-edge but also dependable for continuous, large-scale production.
