Faridabad Smart City Initiative: 86% Budget Spent, Yet Projects Remain Unfinished
Faridabad is close to reaching a significant milestone with its Smart City initiative. Approximately 86% of the allocated budget has been spent, but several projects still await completion. Originally, the initiative was set to conclude by the end of this financial year. However, authorities are considering extending the deadline due to ongoing work.
Faridabad Smart City Limited (FSCL) started this ambitious project in 2016-17. The aim is to implement development projects worth around Rs 1,000 crore. So far, FSCL has secured Rs 960 crore in funding for 45 approved schemes. Out of these, 24 projects are either complete or in the process of being transferred to local agencies.
Despite the progress, nine projects remain unfinished. With Rs 130 crore still available, officials plan to either use these funds for ongoing work or transfer them to other agencies if tasks are not completed by March 31. Consequently, the current pace of progress has led authorities to look into a possible extension.
One major undertaking still in progress is the Rs 100 crore Badkhal Lake rejuvenation. This project is projected to take another four to five months to complete. Other pending projects highlight the need for continued efforts to achieve the initiative’s goals.
Faridabad was selected as one of the 100 cities for the Smart City Mission in 2015-16. The initiative has contributed to various projects, including the development of an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for traffic supervision, 26.1 km of smart roads, and multiple sewage upgrades. Additionally, the initiative has introduced community-friendly features like open-air gyms, rainwater harvesting systems, and beautification projects along National Highway intersections.
The Smart City project covers an expansive area of 1,267 acres and includes various neighborhoods and sectors. Some successful projects, like the SCADA system and sewage treatment plants, already received handovers to local agencies.
Sanjay Joon, CEO of FSCL, recognizes the ongoing efforts and challenges. He stated, “The FSCL has been working to complete the pending works in a minimum period of time and as per the directions of the government.” As Faridabad continues its journey toward becoming a smart city, the hope remains that the remaining projects will soon align with the ambitious vision laid out for the community.
