    Essential Insights

    1. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) lags behind China’s national average in basic research, with only 5.67% of R&D funding allocated to it in 2024.
    2. Despite its innovation potential in semiconductors and smart manufacturing, GBA’s innovation remains predominantly application-driven, lacking strong foundational scientific research.
    3. The GBA’s basic research spending is significantly lower compared to the US (14.5%) and South Korea (nearly 15%), highlighting a gap in fundamentals.
    4. While home to tech giants like Huawei, Tencent, DJI, and BYD, the region’s overall innovation ecosystem needs bolstering in original scientific innovation.

Research Investment Shows Room for Growth

Despite its reputation as a major tech center, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) invests less in basic research compared to other leading regions. In 2024, the area spent about 5.67% of its R&D budget on foundational science. This is below the national Chinese average of 6.9%, and much lower than the 14.5% and 15% levels seen in the US and South Korea, respectively. This gap suggests that the GBA focuses more on applying existing technology rather than exploring new scientific frontiers. While the region excels in sectors like semiconductors and smart manufacturing, its limited investment in fundamental research could slow long-term innovation and breakthrough discoveries.

    Practical Focus and Future Potential

The region’s approach reflects a practical mindset. Companies tend to ramp up research investment only when clear use cases emerge. This application-driven strategy helps bring products to market faster, boosting economic growth. However, it may also hinder the development of original science, which is essential for transformative technological advances. Despite this, the GBA remains a powerful tech hub, home to industry giants and a vibrant ecosystem. By increasing its focus on basic research, the area could strengthen its leadership and contribute even more significantly to the human journey of technological progress.
