Google to Enhance Security by Blocking Sideloading of Unverified Apps
Google plans to implement a significant security feature for Android users. Starting in late 2026, the company will require developers to verify their identities before users can sideload apps. This move responds to a recent analysis revealing that over 50 times more malware comes from sideloaded apps than those available on Google Play.
The new verification process aims to protect users from malicious entities. Google believes that by confirming a developer’s identity, it can limit the spread of scams and malware. According to Google, apps must be registered by verified developers to install on certified Android devices. Most Android phones in the U.S. and Europe fall into this category if they include Google Play.
To facilitate this change, Google will introduce a new Android Developer Console. This console will allow developers distributing outside of its app store to quickly authenticate their identities. Developers can also register their package names in this system.
Google compared this verification process to an airport ID check. This method will confirm who the developer is without reviewing the actual app content. Therefore, developers will still have the freedom to distribute their apps on various platforms, not just Google Play.
