Building Community in Kendall Square’s Innovation Hub

    Top Highlights

    1. Kendall Square’s innovation leaders focused on a key question: how can AI help workers build skills and do more?
    2. MIT’s Daron Acemoglu warned that trust in democracy is eroding—and urged renewed support for inclusive institutions.
    3. Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui credited collaboration among residents, government, nonprofits, and labs with shaping Kendall Square.
    4. Local leaders said the area’s talent, education, and shared purpose are strengths worth protecting.

    Innovation Needs a Local Foundation

Kendall Square’s reputation rests on more than research labs and new companies. At a recent community gathering, business leaders, residents, students and public officials discussed how innovation affects the people who live and work nearby. The message was clear: Progress depends on collaboration among institutions, government, nonprofits and neighborhood businesses.

AI Should Expand What Workers Can Do

A keynote economist urged the audience to treat artificial intelligence as a tool for workers, not a threat to their jobs. Used well, AI could help people build skills and take on new tasks. However, that outcome will not happen automatically. Employers and communities must consider how workers can learn to use these tools and share in their benefits.

    Collaboration Takes Ongoing Work

Cambridge’s history offers one example. In the 1970s, residents and biotech researchers worked together on guidelines for recombinant DNA research. That cooperation helped shape the area’s life sciences sector. Today, Kendall Square still draws strength from talent, education and shared purpose. Yet leaders also stressed the need to protect those qualities and rebuild public trust. Innovation can improve lives, but its success depends on who has a voice in shaping it.
