Malaysian Shutdown of Network School Raises Questions

The Malaysian government has ordered the shutdown of the Network School, a startup-focused community founded by prominent entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan. The program aimed to create a new society through a series of ambitious steps outlined in Srinivasan’s book, “The Network State.” The community called itself “a frontier for techno-optimists,” attracting those interested in technology, self-improvement, and new governance models. However, the reality of the site was less ideal. Attendees complained about moldy rooms, limited social options, and a lack of diversity. Despite these issues, the project’s core purpose was to experiment with building a new society from the ground up. The shutdown raises questions about the practicality of such bold ideas and whether these experiments can succeed in real-world settings.

The program was based in an abandoned hotel in Malaysia and was billed as a mix between a tech incubator and a retreat for innovators. Srinivasan described his goal as “starting a new country,” with the Network School serving as a first step. Yet, the Malaysian authorities cited licensing issues as the reason for the shutdown. Srinivasan, who reportedly renounced his American citizenship in 2023, responded publicly. He identified himself as “a proud Singaporean” and claimed the Wall Street Journal was working on a “hit piece” to make him look odd. Despite the closure in Malaysia, Srinivasan announced a plan to establish a campus in Kazakhstan. The move suggests that the idea behind the Network School still has momentum, even as initial efforts face practical roadblocks. The future of such experimental communities depends on their ability to navigate local regulations and whether they can provide meaningful, attainable alternatives to traditional society.
