    Connecting Students with Microelectronics Innovation

    The 2026 Northeast Microelectronics Internship Program (NMIP) at MIT brought together 30 top university students for a week of hands-on learning. Organized by MIT Microsystems Technology Laboratories, the program ran from July 13-17. It aimed to introduce students to the fast-changing world of semiconductor technology and microelectronics. Participants visited leading institutions including MIT.nano, IBM Research, GlobalFoundries, RPI, and NY CREATES. They engaged with researchers, industry experts, faculty, and students to explore the entire microelectronics ecosystem. The experience helped students connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications, giving them insight into cutting-edge research and manufacturing.

    The program kicked off at MIT.nano, where leaders discussed the future of microelectronics and its societal impact. Graduate students showcased research in areas like nanoelectronics, photonics, and quantum tech. An industry panel highlighted the transition from academic research to careers in the sector. Students learned about professional paths and gained tips for pursuing postgraduate studies or entering the industry. This exposure encouraged students to think about how engineering can solve global challenges and shape future innovations.

    Building Future Leaders in Microelectronics

    Throughout the week, students toured advanced facilities, including MIT’s labs, IBM’s quantum hardware, and GlobalFoundries’ semiconductor plants.
