    Fast Facts

    1. Nostalgic Return: Apple revives the concept of knitted accessories with the iPhone Pocket, a yarn-based pouch designed for the latest iPhones, reminiscent of their iconic iPod socks.

    2. Fashion Collaboration: Created in partnership with Issey Miyake, the iPhone Pocket features a unique pleat design and is marketed as a stylish, high-fashion statement piece.

    3. Versatile Design: Available in short and long options, it can be worn crossbody or as a wristlet, accommodating the phone and small essentials like AirPods and keys.

    4. Targeting Gen Z: Priced at $150 and $230 depending on the length, the iPhone Pocket caters to younger consumers, reflecting Apple’s insights into contemporary fashion trends.

Don’t Call It a Sock. It’s Apple’s $230 iPhone Pocket, Thank You Very Much

Apple has entered the fashion tech arena with its new iPhone Pocket, a $230 accessory that raises eyebrows and expectations. This item, designed in collaboration with fashion brand Issey Miyake, reimagines the beloved iPod sock but for today’s smartphones.

The iPhone Pocket resembles a knitted pouch, effectively a “yarn sling,” that holds iPhones and other small items. Yes, it looks a bit quirky, almost like a shrunken sweater or, depending on your perspective, a unique mankini. But this accessory comes in two lengths: short and long.

With the short version acting like a wristlet, and the long one transforming your phone into a fashionable crossbody, it offers versatility. Transitioning from casual to trendy, the iPhone Pocket’s design encourages wearers to showcase their phone while also stashing essentials like AirPods and lip balm.

Fashion writer Tiffany Lo praises the iPhone Pocket’s design, calling it a reflection of Issey Miyake’s minimalist style. “It’s instantly recognizable,” she notes, highlighting how the design uses a single piece of fabric and a pleated pattern. This collaboration taps into a legacy where Miyake once styled Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

The aesthetics are diverse; the short strap is available in eight colors, including lemon and sapphire, while the long strap is limited to three: peacock, cinnamon, and black. Users will likely appreciate the options and the chance to express individual styles.

Younger consumers might find this accessory appealing. Lo points out that the ability to wear it as a crossbody aligns with current trends favored by Gen Z. Apple has clearly identified a niche market, especially after launching several crossbody straps this year.

However, the price tag raises concerns. At $150 for the short version and $230 for the long one, affordability strikes a stark contrast to the original iPod socks, which retailed for just $29.

The iPhone Pocket launches this Friday, available online and in select high-end Apple stores, including locations in New York and Paris. As Apple ventures into this blend of technology and fashion, it ignites discussions about the future of wearable tech. It challenges the notion that accessories must be purely functional.

In a time when technology plays a pivotal role in daily life, Apple’s latest offering demonstrates a deliberate push into lifestyle and self-expression. The iPhone Pocket, quirky or chic, marks a notable step in the convergence of tech and fashion.
