Hackers Exploited PHP Flaws Before Patches Arrived

    Quick Takeaways

    1. PHP2Shell was exploited before disclosure: AWS found an attack attempt dating to October 17—four days before the vulnerabilities were publicly revealed.
    2. The scramble began immediately: After patches were released, researchers saw multiple exploitation attempts, some appearing before the public announcement.
    3. Who got the early details is unclear: The pre-disclosure attempt came through an anonymized network, and AWS says it’s uncertain whether it would have worked against real systems.
    4. AI is shrinking defenders’ lead: AWS warns attackers can increasingly turn patch details into working exploits within hours—or minutes.

The Patch Came After the First Warning

PHP powers many websites and apps, so fixes for two critical flaws sparked a rapid patching effort. However, new findings show that attackers may have moved earlier. Researchers found an attempt against a deliberately exposed server on Oct. 17, four days before public disclosure.

The attempt came through an anonymizing network. Researchers have not confirmed who was behind it, how they learned about the flaws or whether the attack would have worked against a real system.

    Exploitation Spread Quickly

On the day the flaws became public, researchers recorded multiple attempts to exploit them. Public proof-of-concept code also began to appear. Some organizations temporarily took key websites offline while they prepared to install fixes.

Still, an attempted attack does not prove a system was breached. Researchers say the flaws, known collectively as PHP2Shell, now face broad exploitation. That makes prompt patching and checks for unusual activity especially important.

    A Shrinking Window to Respond

In the past, many attackers waited for public exploit code. Now, AI tools can help more people turn patch details into attack methods, sometimes within hours. As a result, the time between a fix and a working exploit keeps shrinking.

That shift raises the stakes for software teams, but it also points to a path forward: faster, coordinated disclosure and quicker patching. For organizations that rely on PHP, regular updates and clear response plans can reduce risk—even when they cannot prevent every attack.
