    Reaching a New Milestone in Quantum Communication

    Physicists have set a new record in quantum entanglement by connecting two quantum memories across a 420-kilometer (261 miles) optical fiber. This achievement surpasses previous limits by more than four times and goes beyond what direct transmission can typically accomplish. The team, led by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, used advanced techniques to maintain entanglement over such a long distance. Their success demonstrates progress in creating practical quantum networks that can operate over large areas, beyond city-scale confines.

    The experiment involved laser-cooled clouds of rubidium atoms serving as quantum memories, named Alice and Bob. These memories exchanged photons through the fiber, with a middle station called Charlie analyzing the signals. If Charlie detected the correct interference pattern, it confirmed the entanglement between Alice and Bob, even though they never directly interacted. The researchers improved key technologies, including converting photons to wavelengths suitable for fiber travel, stabilizing the system constantly, and using a single-photon scheme to maximize efficiency. Their work also challenges the PLOB bound, a limit that predicts how much quantum information can travel through a lossy fiber. They showed that memory-based systems can outperform simple direct transmission, paving the way for larger quantum networks.

    While practical quantum internet technology remains years away, this breakthrough highlights a critical step. Connecting distant quantum memories is essential for future quantum communication. The findings suggest that with continued improvements, large-scale, secure quantum networks could become a reality, laying the foundation for advanced information security and new computing paradigms.
