    Top Highlights

    1. Researchers developed NEUSLeeP, a soft patch that enhances REM sleep noninvasively.
    2. The device uses ultrasound and brain activity tracking to target sleep-regulating deep brain areas.
    3. In tests, participants entered REM 43 minutes earlier and stayed longer.
    4. The technology may aid emotional health, stress response, and treat sleep disorders.

Innovative Wearable Enhances REM Sleep Naturally

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a new wearable device called NEUSLeeP. This soft patch uses gentle ultrasound waves combined with brain activity sensors. It’s designed to improve REM sleep without drugs or surgery. The device can target deep brain regions involved in sleep and track responses in real-time. This breakthrough offers a noninvasive way to help people achieve better sleep.

In a recent study with 28 participants, the patch helped them reach REM sleep faster—about 43 minutes sooner on average. Participants stayed in REM about 16 minutes longer. The technology proved safe and comfortable, with minimal side effects. Both healthy sleepers and those with sleep issues experienced benefits. The device’s ability to monitor and influence brain activity at home opens new possibilities for managing sleep.

Potential for Better Mental Health and Future Use

The research suggests NEUSLeeP might aid emotional health by enhancing REM sleep, which is linked to stress regulation and mood. Increased heart rate variability in users shows the patch could help with stress response. Brain scans also revealed changes in emotion-related circuits, hinting at mental health benefits. Experts note that improving REM could help reduce anxiety and depression, conditions often tied to sleep problems.

The team plans larger studies to test the device further. They want to see if NEUSLeeP can help treat PTSD, depression, and chronic insomnia. The goal is to turn the technology into an accessible home-treatment option. The developers are working with UT’s commercialization team to bring the device to market. If successful, millions could access a safe, non-drug way to improve sleep and mental resilience.
