    Quick Takeaways

    1. Riot Games is ending active development of 2XKO by December, although servers will remain online and the game will stay downloadable for free.
    2. The company will deliver final updates and new content, including characters Lux in September and Samira in October, before ceasing further development.
    3. All in-game purchases made before August 20 will be refunded, with PC refunds expected to complete by November.
    4. Despite initial interest from dedicated fighting game fans, 2XKO failed to attract widespread engagement, leading Riot to conclude its operational costs outweigh its revenue.

End of Active Development and What It Means

Riot Games is ending active development of its first fighting game, 2XKO, in December. Starting now, the company will keep the servers online but stop creating new content. The decision comes because the game costs more to run than it makes in revenue. This move marks a significant shift for Riot, which has focused mainly on PC games before venturing into consoles. While players can still play the game, no major updates or new features are coming after October. Riot is also removing the ability to buy KO Points, which are in-game purchases, starting today. Players who bought items before August 20 can expect refunds soon. PC users will get their refunds within two weeks, and console players may hear from customer support soon. Although the servers remain open, the game is slowly moving towards its final chapter. This decision reflects the challenge of balancing game creation costs with player interest and revenue.

    Upcoming Final Content and Features

Despite halting active development, Riot plans to roll out some new content in the coming months. The first is the highly anticipated mage support character, Lux, launching on September 8 with patch 1.3.1. This update also introduces the 2XKO Ultimate Bundle, a $40 package that includes almost all of the game’s cosmetics, including skins for Lux. The patch will also add new stages and profile customization options, which can be purchased with in-game currency. Additionally, Riot is removing Ranked lobbies, making all champions available to play for free. In October, the team will release the last new character, Samira, a pistol-wielding ADC, via patch 1.3.3. These updates aim to give players a satisfying final farewell with new content. Bug fixes may come in December if needed. Riot intends to keep the game’s servers live and the game free on PC and consoles, allowing fans to enjoy it for some time longer.

Reflections on Its Impact and Future

Launching 2XKO was a bold move for Riot, marking their first major step outside PC gaming. They hoped to attract both fighting game fans and new players on consoles. However, despite some early interest, the game didn’t grow as big as hoped. The company faced a tough reality: maintaining the game costs too much for limited returns. This led to layoffs and a strategic reevaluation. Still, Riot recognizes the game’s value to the dedicated community. For die-hard fans, 2XKO offered a fresh experience, and the upcoming content keeps that spirit alive. At the same time, Riot remains committed to delivering quality gaming experiences, even if they are shorter-lived. Moving forward, the company will learn from this venture to build even better games in the future. Fans can look forward to the final updates, and many will appreciate having access to the game for as long as possible.
